Deadlift Only Program, Shoulder Drama

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

Yesterday was 490 for my 1+ AMRAP (first work set). Hit 3 reps. Left 1 in the tank so the next 2 sets wouldn't kill me. Feeling solid all around. Did some rack pulls from just above the knee at 725lb, a huge PR for me on those. Lost a big thick callus on my palm below the left middle finger on the last rack pull. Glued the little sucker back down. It hurts though, tore down pretty deep. It prompted me to order some of those grip pads to try out. I doubt I can hold 700+ with them without straps, but I'll experiment. They have great reviews, so we'll see. Might post my own review later.

The new belt is great. Been working on low bar squats, where I tend to go WAY deeper than I need to. Since low bar squat isn't something I regularly include in training, if I plan on competing in a meet any time in the future I've got to start working them in at least a bit. I'm also adjusting to the belt while deadlifting. Still hurts but I found a slightly higher placement that's not as bad. The only negative so far is the way my arms dig into the damned thing.

Pull-up bar came yesterday and as soon as I used it, felt intense pain from my left shoulder down the side of that arm to the elbow. Impingement is acting up again I guess. It was identified when I had a bilateral arthrogram performed early last year, which ultimately led to me having surgery on the right shoulder. I suspect all the behind the neck pressing, light as it's been, has also contributed. I'll have to dial it back on a few of the things I now know cause the problem to show up.
